LED Street Lighting

The market for LED outdoor lighting in California is in remarkable flux right now.

Over just the past 18 months, streetlight costs have fallen by up to 50 percent, driven largely by the increased efficiency of LED lamps. And analysts expect this shift to accelerate in the next few years. Pike Research estimates that smart street lighting systems will increase tenfold from 2012 numbers. They also estimate that the number of LED communication nodes will jump from 500,000 to nearly 5 million by 2020.

Whether you’re a municipal officer overseeing an upgrade to your town’s infrastructure or a property developer searching for a reliable, cost-effective way to light up properties and keep them safe and energy efficient, an LED lighting approach may be just what the doctor ordered.

Different Street Lighting Needs Lead to Different Cost Benefit Analyses

A business that wants to light up its parking lot will have very different needs and constraints than, say, a small town that wants to upgrade its highways and surface streets.

Factors you need to consider may include:

  • Your current street lighting infrastructure, and its ability (or lack thereof) to be upgraded to LED;
  • Your budget and timeframe for any architectural or engineering changes;
  • Whether you need customized software solutions to handle complex demands and/or traffic configurations;
  • Your access to labor;
  • Safety concerns;
  • The degree to which your Board of Advisors, City Council, or other “group in charge” is open to innovative LED streetlight technology.

Making the Switch to LED Lamps – Sooner Or Later

Not all business and municipalities will adopt LED lighting in Nevada or California immediately – or even in the next few years. Some more conservative groups will want to “wait and see” whether the early adopters succeed with this technology, save money, enjoy more reliability, and create safer streets.
