Upfront Cost of LED Lighting Outweighed by Energy Savings

Many small cities are investing in their futures by converting their old mercury vapor and high-pressure sodium streetlights to LED. Planners must confront high initial costs – some medium sized cities have spent over $2 million on LED street lighting fixtures alone – but even conservative city officers will appreciate the prospect of permanently lower energy bills.

LED Streetlights in Action

The Smart Lights for Smart Cities program installed more than 5,700 energy-efficient lights in 25 cities and towns in Kansas and Missouri. These outdoor LED lights are expected to jointly save these communities $25 million in energy costs.

Neighborhoods and small cities are also using LED lighting as a selling point to attract new residents and make their communities more “livable.” Other cities aim to stretch their budget dollars by installing LED street lights. In addition to being energy-efficient and cheap to maintain, LED bulbs are long-lived; they rarely need to be changed.

Smart Technologies

Some communities are paring LED lighting with smart technologies. Chips installed into streetlights give cities the ability to control the lights from a phone or computer terminal. Using this technology, they can improve safety by increasing lighting in areas hosting nighttime events and reduce costs through the use of motion sensors that turn the lights on only when needed.
