Although it once seemed impossible, sports facility operators everywhere are now replacing their old metal halide lighting systems with LED lighting technology. Not only is this trend improving the quality of facility illumination, but it is also saving sports teams millions in energy expenses.

Outdoor LED lighting projects enhance facility illumination by controlling glare and ensuring that light shines evenly across the playing surface. This improves the viewing experience for fans in the stadium as well as those watching the game on television. Sports teams can also use LED systems to create light shows to entertain fans during downtime.

Outdoor lighting design experts estimate that converting from metal halide lighting to LED systems saves sports teams as much as 85 percent or more in energy expenses. In fact, when New York’s War Memorial Arena converted its lighting system to LED, energy usage dropped by 87 percent. In addition, many states offer a 20 to 25 percent rebate for stadiums and arenas that switch to LED, thus increasing cost savings even more.

Forbes reports that “LED currently lights the University of Phoenix stadium, and the Miami Dolphins will be adding… an LED lighting system to Sun Life Stadium for 2016. The Minnesota Vikings… and 2 other NFL venues are expected to make similar announcements soon.” However, mass adoption of the LED approach may take a while. Currently, Per Forbes’ analysis, “LED penetration at sports venues is currently less than 5%.” They also add that in 2015, an estimated 90% of facility operators who installed a new lighting system chose LEDs.
